Introdution

IntroduçãoThe Federal University of Ceara (UFC), through the Wireless Telecommunication Research Group (GTEL), is part of the worldwide effort to set the latest generation technology on cell phone and mobile internet broadband. This has made possible the access to internet in mobile devices as well as digital inclusion to a large extent of the Brazilian population.

GTEL is located in the city of Fortaleza, The State of Ceara and linked to the Tele-Informatics Engineering Department (DETI) at UFC. The GTEL was created in the year 2000 and its mission is to develop wireless communication technology through academic and applied research carried out by professors, undergraduate and graduate students from the Federal University of Ceara.

The work developed through mathematic and computational analysis, always aims at optimizing the use of mobile phone in order to lower down the costs and turn the service more reliable and safe to the users. Also, to integrate current and emerging technologies, favoring their inter communication.The researchers at GTEL reproduce and study all the technical hardships identified in the day-to-day operation of mobile communication systems, such as the intense radio signals traffic from the big cities and the technical limitations of current access networks. From this point on, new solutions are proposed. The GTEL is officially recognized by the Federal University of Ceara and registered in the research groups directory of the National Council of Science and Technology (CNPQ). Its research activities take place in accordance with the Tele Information Engineering Graduation Program (PPGETI), in its master´s and doctorate degree courses. In addition, GTEL also operates as a research lab and development center. Its operations are carried out in partnership with public and private companies and funding agencies. These partnership help create an innovative and creative environment which is also scientifically productive.

THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF CEARA:

Established in 1954, The Federal University of Ceara (UFC) is the greatest higher education institution in the State of Ceara and one of the most outstanding university in the Brazilian Northeast. It offers a set of under graduation and graduation courses (master´s degree and doctorate) in the fields of knowledge such as health, engineering, basic sciences, and social sciences. It is scattered into several campuses in the city of Fortaleza as well as within other cities from the countryside of Ceara. UFC performs research in the greater ITC field (information and communication technologies) but with a focus in wireless telecommunication at GTEL.

THE ENGENEERING AND TELEINFORMATION DEPARTMENT (DETI):

DETI is composed by a group of professors with doctorate who have their focus on telecommunication systems, computer engineering and information technologies. DETI offers specialized courses in the fields of Computer and Telecommunication Engineering. Its Graduation courses (master´s and doctorate), recognized by CAPES (Coordination of Higher Education Personnel Improvement), comprises its focuses areas on Signals and System as well as Electromagnetism.

Reitoria UFCDETI is registered in the Technology of Information Committee Area (CATI), from the Science and Technology Ministry (MCT), in order to benefit from brazilian incentive laws for R&D funding.

Structure

GTEL is comprised of several researchers such as the Federal University (UFC´s) professors, pos doctoral researchers, undergraduate and graduate students and assistant personnel (technical\administration support). The GTEL research covers all cycle of communication systems, from the physical layer to user applications. In addition to the research and development, GTEL´s goal is to contribute to form technically skilled professionals in the field of ITC (Technology of Information and communication) in Brazil.

GTEL is located in its own building at the Pici Campus, in Fortaleza. It counts on with infrastructure to develop research and development project activities, especially computer network infra structure and access to sites of the most outstanding publications with full text. Regarding infrastructure, a high performance computational cluster should be pointed out. It supports the research efforts based on complex computer simulations.

GTEL building structure is inspired in R&D reference centers. The working environment is characterized by the spontaneity and flexibility in relation to the schedule. The working routine is oriented towards results.

Opportunities

Regarding the academic field, GTEL not only opens up opportunities to their students to start in the scientific production, but also favors the interchange of experiences between the University and professionals from other mobile phone research centers worldwide. The contact with other Brazilian and foreign universities of excellence in telecommunication is intense. The GTEL researchers frequently participate in conferences or publish their papers in international journals. The Ericsson Research Center in Stockholm, Sweden, has regularly received graduate students from GTEL to short term internships.

In addition, there are actions already established along with the productive sector as well as in the university environment. The GTEL has already started its research initiatives with the mobile phone - fifth generation or 5G.

Oportunidades“We have a portfolio of skills in the most varied technical areas of wireless communication. In view of that we are able to start right away the research in 5G”, states professor Rodrigo Cavalcanti, GTEL´s coordinator. The fifth generation systems anticipate transmission rates of several gigabits per second and should be implemented by the year 2020.

Partnerships

In addition to the contribution to society, there are also benefits to the University as well as to the its community. Thanks to the partnerships established with public and private companies, the GTEL has become an excellent opportunity to insert the university students in the job market, since the products developed by the researchers will be used as to the conception, testing and the implementation of new products and services to the customers. This can be verified by the variety of position taken by the students from the Group in industry and academia. The knowledge generated within the projects becomes public in scientific papers, improving the university scientific production records. This relation of multilateral gain has characterized, for example, the GTEL partnership with Ericsson. It is a world leading manufacturing of telecommunication network equipment and service provision. Ericsson has been involved in the development of all mobile communication standards. This telecommunications multinational company has a partnership with GTEL since the year of GTEL´s creation, having established projects in all research fields which GTEL operates.

The Group has intensively operated in projects supported by the Brazilian incentive Information Law. In addition it has produced new knowledge that has become concrete in a way of scientific publications and patents. Also, the research activities reinforce the educational process of under graduate and graduate UFC´s students. GTEL is organized within three research lines, which address the telecommunication system and services network, from technology conception on physical and access layers through the assessment of quality of service.

Applications of GTEL’s Research:

• Performance optimization of the wireless and mobile phone of 4th and 5th generation systems;
• Multiple antenna technologies in order to increase capacity;
• Improved quality of services and of experience of users regarding the internet services;
• Advanced computational simulations and performance assessment;
• Performance optimization of new services in wireless data.

Description of Research Lines:

• Antennas and Transceivers: here we study the phenomenon of propagation and how they impact in the equipment performance towards the transmission and reception of radio waves; assess the performance of wireless technologies in different environments such as in big cities, inside buildings as well as in soccer stadiums.
• Signal Processing: This is the study of digital codification of audio and video signals, as well as of internet data, and its processing in order to strengthen them against interferences and noise, inherent in the wireless communication systems.
• Radio Resource Management: It is the study of the sharing process regarding the spectrum and infra structure of the mobile phone network. This includes the optimized position of antennas in the cities and the control of the power of cell phone transmission. The aim is the improved quality noted by the final user.
